My Little Black Dress

A few weeks back I realized that I'd packed NOTHING formal to wear to this year's holiday party, so I decided to take a chance and have a dress made. So, I scoured the internet looking for a simple black dress, that could easily be reproduced. I finally found a strapless, black cocktail dress on the J. Crew website. I printed pictures of it from every angle, and headed off to Mebaz to see if they could make it for me in less than 2 weeks!

This is Mebaz. Wall to wall fabric in tons of colors and lots of textures. How in the heck was I supposed to pick the right one for my dress?

With the expert help of the employees at Mebaz, I picked this fabric. Black with a little sheen, and the tiniest bit of stretch. Yep, this was the one. After I picked the fabric, it was time to get measured, pay for the material, labor, and lining. I was told to return one week later for my first fitting.

This is what the dress looked like at my first fitting. You can see the stitches are just temporary, and there was no lining. It was too big, so, they made the proper adjustments and promised me it would be ready for pick up just 2 days later.

Ta-Da! Here's the final product. A simple black strapless dress to wear to this year's holiday party, and probably a wedding or two next year! It was an ordeal, but well worth it because I can now say that I had a dress made for me in India!

Meet My Team!

On Wednesday night, my team had our Q4 Team Dinner. We went to Koyla, an Indian restaurant here in Hyderabad. (Koyla means coal in Hindi.) We hung out, played games, and ate on the rooftop terrace, overlooking the city. It was a lot of fun.

Mydhili, Adarsh, Satarupa, Khalid, Anjana, Prathibha, and Me. This was the collage we created to represent our theme "Truly Indian". I sort of stick out, don't I?

Hyderabad 10k

This morning I ran the Hyderabad 10k! It took me 65 minutes, not bad considering I haven't run outside much at all since I've been here. There were tons of people racing this morning: men, women, and children. Some with flip flops, others in sandals, a few men in jeans, and some even ran with bare feet!

Me, Alex, Emma, & David after the race!

Grateful.

I just got home from Thanksgiving dinner at the Gilbert's place. Our boss, Roy, and his wife Leigh Anne welcomed all of the American expats to their home. We had turkey, stuffing, gravy, veggies, and even pumpkin pie! It was great to be surrounded by my friends and coworkers. Tonight, home felt a little less far away.

2006 has been the best year yet, and have so much to be thankful for: my supportive and loving family, incredibly loyal friends, true love, the opportunity to live and work in a part of the world I would have never seen otherwise, and challenging and stimulating work.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

The City Formerly Known as Bangalore

This past weekend, Anna, Charise, Mahin, Jeff, and I went to Bangalore (Technically, as of 2 weeks ago it is now called Bengaluru). Many cities in India have changed their names in recent years, for example:

Bombay ---> Mumbai
Calcutta ---> Kolkata
Madras ---> Chennai
and now...
Bangalore ---> Bengaluru

It was a quick, fun weekend filled with shopping, eating, and relaxing. I was lucky enough to spend 3 hours at a spa on Sunday. I'm getting spoiled here, I'm afraid. For more pics of our weekend click here.

Jeff actually drove us to dinner in this rickshaw! It was awesome. The driver sat next to him and acted as a brake man.

We heart rickshaws!

Harlem Globetrotters...in INDIA!

Yep, the Harlem Globetrotters are on an Indian Tour and are playing in Hyderabad this week. We expats snagged a bunch of tickets and had a great time. The team was really funny and entertaining.

Afterwards we all go to go onto the court to meet the players. They wanted to know where we were from, and why we were in India. It was completely random, but totally fun!

Random India Sighting #6

The latest installment of 'Random India Sighting' comes courtesy of Charise, who has a great eye for random India stuff! Airport regulations here are very similar to those in the US, with a slight variation...no pickles allowed in your carry-on luggage. Bummer.

Varanasi

This past weekend 11 of us went took a quick trip to Varanasi (India's Holy City). It is the oldest living city in the world, and gave me my first real taste of what I'll call 'Authentic' India. This trip made me realize that Hyderabad is really a bubble, full of many of the amenities that make me feel at home.

We arrived on Saturday later than expected due to plane delays. That night was ate dinner at our hotel, then took a walking tour along the Ganges. It felt good to walk around! So much of my time here is spent indoors, or in a car being driven somewhere, that it was nice to use my feet as transportation for once. We returned to the hotel for tea and hot chocolate, then were in bed early.

We woke up at 5am on Sunday (yuck!) to meet our boat by 5:30. That morning we took a 2 hour boat tour of the Ganges. It was really fantastic -- at sunrise dozens, maybe hundreds of people make their daily pilgrammage to bathe in the holy river. If I had even so much as touched the water, I would probably have gotten sick, but the people who live here are essestially immune, as their bodies must build up certain antibodies against the germs and bacteria.

24 hours a day Hindus cremate bodies and throw the remaining ashes into the Ganges. We got the chance to get very close to 2 cremation sites. It was an incredibly interesting experience for me -- one which required that I see the world through a different set of eyes. I had to take a few steps back and accept that just because something is different, or perhaps strange, it doesn't mean it's wrong. All in all, I am glad we went, and glad I am now able to say that I've seen the famous Ganges.

Random India Sighting #5

Anna and I got a good laugh when we saw this sign at the Mumbai Airport security checkpoint. Men are 'frisked' (wanded with the metal detector) out in the open, for all to see. Women, on the other hand, have to be 'frisked' inside an enclosed area, with curtains and tassles. It's the weirdest thing. Just thought I'd share.

Expats: We Roll Deep

Last night we (all 20 something of us) went to Angeethi's for Matt's farewell dinner. He's been in Hyderabad for about 4 months and is heading back to Mountain View late tonight. Matt's been a lot of fun to hang out with, and has shown a bunch of us the ropes here in HYD. Matt - you'll be missed...safe travels!

Reeee-Tesh!

Guess who's visiting from Delhi for the next two weeks? RITESH! He arrived in Hyderabad a few days ago, so we met up for brunch at the Taj Krishna on Sunday! We had so much catching up to do that we met up for dinner later that night at the Novotel. It's really great having him here -- it's like a little piece of home! For those of you who don't know -- Ritesh and I joined our company as temps on the same day (with Cody, Yoonie, & Trovato) nearly 2.5 yrs ago on June 15, 2004.

Anniversary

Today is my one year anniversary with Sean. It's my first ever one year anniversary with anyone, so, needless to say, I'm bummed that we can't be together. I've planned a full day of activity, to distract myself: run in the botanical gardens, shopping, brunch at the Taj, then an afternoon at the Spa. It should be a great day!

Happy Anniversary, Sean!
